2 Samuel 1:23 – (Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.)
As we reflect on the verse above, we see that King David made a very interesting statement about King Saul and his son Jonathan after their death. We can see that David made this statement right after Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle. This is quite a testament to their battle skills and physical prowess, as they were swifter than eagles and stronger than lions.
Even though David was reflecting on them in the natural physical state. We as followers of Jesus need to look with our spiritual eyes on how this statement can apply to us and our walk with the Lord. First of all, we need to be aware that we are called to reach the lost with the good news of Jesus. We also, need to edify and encourage our brothers and sisters in the Lord.
God wants to make us swifter than eagles and stronger than lions in the spiritual sense when it comes to doing his work. No matter if we are a pastor, airline pilot, housewife, etc, this is his desire for us. How do we do this you may ask and how does this verse apply to me? Well let’s look at the character traits of the eagle and lion.
Job 39:27 – (Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make its nest on high?)   The eagle soars high with great vision and has the ability to quickly fly down to ground level at the right moment. The eagle also, can fly above the storm winds and use these winds to propel itself to its desired destination.
Proverbs 30:30 – (A lion, which is mighty among beasts and does not turn away from any.)
The lion is known to be very mighty, bold, courageous and loyal. As we look at these traits of the eagle and lion, we can see how the Lord wants to use these traits in us to enhance his Kingdom and to help us become everything he has created us to be.
As we become more like the eagle, we will soar higher with greater vision for the things of God. We will be able to better see the needs of others and swiftly come to help them as God directs us. Like the eagle, we will also fly above our own troubles and circumstances and become everything God created us to be!
As we become like the lion, we will become bolder when it comes to sharing our faith with others. We will become more loyal to the Lord and our brothers and sisters in Christ.
2 Chronicles 16:9 – (For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those who heart is loyal to Him.)
A God directs us we will have the courage, strength and loyalty of heart to accomplish what he has called us to do. Another very interesting thing about the eagle and lion is this. They both reside in the wilderness. This is where most people reside in the spiritual sense as they are lost trying to find the right path.   We as followers of Jesus are called to help them as we soar high above the wilderness. With godly vision we see their need and then swiftly come to them in the name of Jesus with the strength and courage to show them the right path out of the wilderness.
I encourage you today to ask God to make you swifter than the eagles and stronger than the lions in Jesus name! Amen!
