WHAT’S IN YOUR HAND

Judges 3:31 – (Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.)

As we look at the above scripture in the book of Judges, we see that Shamgar killed 600 Philistines with his oxgoad. This heroic act also saved Israel. Here we find a very encouraging story that should not only catch our attention but, also highly motivate and encourage us as we look with our spiritual eyes..

First of all, you may be wondering what on earth is an oxgoad and how is this weapon used? Well an oxgoad is not an actual weapon but, a farming implement used to poke and guide farm animals such as an ox. As the ox pulls the plow the oxgoad is used to keep the ox in line and go the direction that the farmer wishes.

The oxgoad is a long stick with a point on the end. As you can see, Shamgar was not a mighty warrior in the typical sense but, a farmer who used what he was used to using in the fields on an every day basis. Shamgar used what he had and what he knew best. The end result was that he killed 600 Philistines. However, what was more important is that he delivered Israel  using what he had.

I will ask you this. What’s in your hand and what are you used to using? Shamgar only had an oxgoad, a farming implement which was enough with God being with him! If you have made Jesus Lord and savior of your life, you have a whole lot more than Shamgar had! Yes if you are a born again follower of Jesus you have two powerful advantages nobody else in biblical times had.

Your first advantage is the Holy Spirit living inside you. The old testament heroes would have the spirit of the Lord come upon them which was very powerful but, now the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, does not have  to come upon you but lives and dwells inside you!
Romans 8:11 (But if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells inside you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you.)

This should get you very excited to say the least. Now after Jesus died on the cross those who have need him Lord and Savior have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside them. However, your second advantage that not even the apostles had is this. They did not have the entire written word of God to use, but you as followers of Jesus do!

That’s your two great advantages. You have the Holy Spirit living inside you and the entire written word of God to use to fulfill your destiny! As Shamgar used what he had in his hand and it was enough. However, what you have is more than enough. The question is, are you going to use what God has given you to fulfill your destiny in the Lord?

Hebrews 4:12 – (For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.)
